In a centralised XML descriptor it is possible to define which types of content need to be managed in a particular way, specifying for each type of content:

owhich workflow process to use to create or approve such type of content
owhich metadata to use to index and which restriction to follow (accepted values, mandatory fields, required languages)
owhich templates to use to create contents that belong to such typology.

An example of typical configuration of the content types can be summarised in the following types:

Generic Resource (Resource file with or without dependency file)

Metadata profile: Basic (a few fields to identify the file, such as the title, the description and the format)
Contents template: none
Workflow template: linear (with an approval phase and an "approved" status)
Metadata profile: Basic (a few fields to identify the file, such as the title, the description and the format)

Learning Object (Teaching unit developed with the authoring tools of eXact LCMS)

Metadata profile: Intermediate (other than the basic fields, some fields are used to indicate the educational aspects - learning objects - and the life cycle - author, contributions, review date -).
Contents template: Slideshow template (for linear tutorial contents) and GLREV (for more structured and interactive contents).
Workflow template: linear (with an approval phase and an "approved" status), recommended for contents like "Slideshow" and a more structured one with several reviewing steps (technical, graphic, pedagogical) recommended for more interactive contents

Assessment Test (Test unit developed with QTI Editor)

Metadata profile: Intermediate (like Learning Objects)
Contents Template: Model of tests creation.
Workflow Template: Structured (like Learning Objects)

SCORM Course

Metadata profile: Complete (to ensure compliance with SCORM specification).
Content Template: none.
Workflow template: very structured, with reviewing and approval interventions even from "QA" users external from the production unit.

In the following sections all the details on the possibilities of configuration from the aspect of metadata profile, content models and workflow steps are provided.
