Localization Processes

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

It is possible to manage different versions of the same LO (or resource package), with the possibility to maintain a link with the master copy in order to be informed when it is updated and be able to update the linked version as well, simply by downloading an .xml file of it and modifying it as necessary. This process is called localization.

Important notes:

Only Resource Packages can be localized (the localization of a "Content Aggregation Package" is not supported by the Localization Engine)
When the Resource Package to be localized is a "Learning Object", the system allows exporting it and re-importing it through an appropriate xml binding of the textual contents there included.

When Learning Objects are developed through an XPT technology (i.e using the models with eXact Packager or Web editor), they can be localized only if the corresponding XPT template is web-safe and installed on the LCMS server.

Any resource file, included in a Resource Package and not directly supported by the web-based XPT editing environment (the Web Editor), will be exported "as-is" (i.e. each file will be embedded as-is within the Localization Pack and re-imported in the same way). This includes e.g. files associated to "asset" nodes within the LO, as well as any unsupported asset.

Relations among materials involved in the process

When a Localization process occurs, each material involved in the process is tagged in an appropriate way, so that it is possible to identify the role of each material in a given Localization process. In addition, other "metadata" will be assigned to involved content objects to identify their nature from a "language" perspective.

To access the localization packages already available on the platform, select "Localization processes" from the left hand side menu of the LCMS Home Page. Launching an empty query (i.e. clicking on the "Go" button), the following window listing all the localization packages available on the system will then display. From here it is also possible to use the "Search" window to search the DR for a specific localization package.

locPacks

In this window listing localization packages, selecting the target item and then clicking on "Localization's materials" on the left side menu, it allows retrieving information about all the materials (master and variations) involved in the single localization package:

locPackShowDetails

Please note: all the information shown in this page can be eventually exported in a csv format selecting the "Material report" button.

To view a localization package, simply click on its name, the following window will then display:

locPackMgmtPage

The following options are available from the bottom of the page:

Download: to download this localization package to the local PC
Update: to create a new version of this localization package
Delete: to delete it from the Digital Repository

From the left menu the "Localization" option is available. By clicking on it the following window will display:

localizationPage

Please note: regarding the master material, if the last version in repository is greater than the version in use in the localization process, a "Compare" button appears allowing to compare the two versions, in order to understand how different they are for localization purposes.

The options available from the left hand side menu will be described in the following section.
